10. The Power of Journaling for Stress Relief

In today’s world, stress is almost a constant companion for many of us—it can feel like we’re always racing to keep up. With so much on our plates, having a simple, accessible way to decompress can be a lifesaver. And that’s where journaling comes in.

For years, journaling has been my go-to for finding peace and clarity, and it’s something I swear by. Here’s why journaling is such a powerful tool for managing stress—and why picking up a pen might be just what you need.

1. It Helps You Offload Your Mind

Sometimes, we don’t even realise how much we’re carrying until we write it down. The simple act of putting your thoughts on paper can feel like a massive mental unload. When our thoughts are swirling around, they can feel overwhelming. But writing them down makes them feel a bit more manageable and gives us a clearer perspective.

  • Try this: Next time you’re feeling stressed, write for 5 minutes about everything on your mind. No filter, no judgement. Just write.

2. It Helps You Understand Your Triggers

Journaling can reveal patterns. Maybe certain events, people, or times of the year tend to stress you out more. By spotting these patterns, you’re able to either avoid those stressors or prepare yourself for them. It’s a bit like finding a torch when you’re in a dark room—you suddenly know what’s around you, and it’s less daunting.

  • Try this: At the end of each day, jot down one thing that caused stress and how you responded to it. Over time, these small reflections can provide some big insights.

3. It Gives Your Emotions a Safe Space

We’re all carrying things that we might not feel comfortable sharing with others—or even ourselves sometimes. Journaling is a private, judgment-free space where you can explore all your emotions. Whether it’s anger, frustration, fear, or sadness, putting your feelings on paper can be incredibly freeing.

4. It Puts Things Into Perspective

Writing forces you to slow down. When we’re stressed, our thoughts often go into overdrive, and everything can seem out of proportion. But when we journal, we tend to see things more clearly. We can look at our worries, put them in context, and realise that we have what it takes to tackle what’s ahead.

5. It Encourages Gratitude

One of the best parts of journaling is the chance to focus on the good stuff. Regularly practicing gratitude is known to improve mood and reduce stress. Even on the toughest days, there’s usually something to be thankful for—a moment in nature, a call from a friend, or a quiet moment to yourself.

  • Try this: Write down one thing you’re grateful for at the end of each journal entry. Over time, you’ll start to notice the good bits more easily, and that gratitude can act like a buffer against stress.

6. It’s an Easy Act of Self-Care

At the end of the day, journaling is all about showing up for yourself. It’s a little ritual where you prioritise you—your thoughts, your feelings, your growth. Knowing that you’re making space for yourself every day, even if it’s only for a few minutes, can create a deep sense of calm and balance.

Getting Started

If you’re new to journaling or have given it a go before but found it hard to stick with, just remember this: there’s no “right” way to do it. Grab a notebook, sit down with a cuppa, and write whatever comes to mind. Don’t overthink it. Let your words flow as naturally as they want to.

In a world that’s constantly moving, journaling is your chance to pause, breathe, and find a little peace. Give it a go and see how it feels. You might be surprised at how much lighter and clearer you feel after just a few pages.

  1. If you’re an emotional eater like I am, I can’t recommend following Rachel Crethar enough! I was lucky to be part of her emotional eating pilot program, and it’s truly been life-changing. Rachel’s getting ready to launch the full program soon, and trust me—you don’t want to miss this!

  2. Here’s another Instagram follow you won’t want to miss! Are you following JB Copeland yet?? Trust me, it’s all pretty self-explanatory—just go have a look for yourself. Swoon!

  3. Mouth taping has become my new go-to! Since early June, I’ve been taping my mouth every night, and I can’t believe the difference—it’s giving me deeper, more restful sleep, and I’m even snoring less! I’ll admit, when I first heard about it, I thought, ‘No way!’ But now, I’m officially a biohacking convert!
