9. knowing the rules

I found myself on the kitchen floor this week with my new electric scrubbing brush following the lines of grout, turning them from dirty to clean. It was medicine for my mind. It was meditation.

And yet I was moving, I was doing something, I was even thinking - shock horror!

But you know what? It was the most present and calm I had felt all day.

That evening I did sit down to meditate, but my mind was busy with worries and I was thinking about that grout and scrubber, so I abandoned my timer and plonked myself on the floor. Bliss.

I’m sharing this story not because I remotely enjoy housework or am advocate for its healing powers, but to share that not all meditation or mindfulness follows the rules.

On instagram a couple of weeks ago I re-shared this post from @melbournemeditationcentre

And was sent so many messages from people saying things like ‘I need to give it another go’ and ‘I thought I was doing it wrong’. Which of course makes me feel so sad.

Meditation is for everyone and not just those that can sit completely still for 30 minutes or ‘clear the mind’ (whatever that means!).

So when meditating remember it is totally fine to:

  • move, stretch, standup and sit down again or walk

  • think, process the day, seek clarity, plan the future or drift back in time to the past

  • laugh, cry, hum, sing, sigh or make any other sounds

  • get bored or restless and abandon your meditation

Don’t let your journey with meditation be cut short because you don’t think you are doing it right. It’s called a meditation practice because each time we turn up to meditate we are just practicing. No pressure, no performance.

Have the rules around meditation held you back?

Hit reply if you have any questions or want to share your meditation journey with me.
